Site fixes for theme problems

Seven opt-in, server-side fixes for theme problems: a skip link, a focus ring, pinch-zoom, link underlines, form labels, new-tab and document-link text. Not an overlay.

Overview

Site fixes are under Lumtera → Settings → Site fixes, for administrators. They exist for problems that come from your theme, which authors cannot fix in their content. There are seven, grouped as Keyboard, Zoom, Links in content and Forms, and every one is off until you turn it on. Each fix explains what it changes and when to leave it off.

Add a "Skip to content" link prints a link as the first item in the page body, hidden until it receives keyboard focus. When you save with it on, Lumtera looks at your home page: if it already has a skip link, none is added, and if it finds the main content area, the link points there; otherwise you enter the ID yourself. On block themes, WordPress adds its own skip link when the template has a main area, and Lumtera then adds none; if that link is switched off, Lumtera adds one and gives the main area an ID. Show where keyboard focus is outlines links, buttons and fields for keyboard users with a 2px ring and a contrasting halo. You can pick the ring color, and the halo is chosen so the two never drop below 4.5:1.

Allow zooming on mobile prints a viewport tag without zoom limits at the end of the page head, which browsers use in place of a restrictive tag printed earlier. The link fixes work on post content as it is shown, not on what is saved: underlines for content links (buttons and menus are left alone), hidden "(opens in a new tab)" text on links that open one, and details such as "(PDF, 1.2 MB)" on links to PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in your Media Library. The forms fix names search and comment fields that have no label at all.

Why does it matter?

Some barriers come from the theme, not from anything an author wrote: no way to skip the menu, focus outlines removed, zoom blocked on phones, content links that look like plain text, a search box with no name. Authors cannot fix these in the editor, and replacing or patching a theme is not always possible straight away.

What do you get?

  • Keyboard: a "Skip to content" link, and a clear focus ring on links, buttons and form fields.
  • Zoom: a viewport tag that lets visitors pinch to zoom again when the theme blocked it.
  • Links in content: underlines, "(opens in a new tab)" on links that open one, and file type and size on links to PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
  • Forms: names for WordPress's search and comment form fields when the theme left them without a label.
  • Every fix is off until you turn it on, and each one says what it changes and when to leave it off.

How does it work?

  1. Find what your theme gets wrong

    Open a page in review mode and use the Whole page and Keyboard tabs. They report a missing skip link, invisible keyboard focus, blocked zoom and links shown by color alone.

  2. Turn on the matching fix

    Under Lumtera → Settings → Site fixes, switch on only what your theme needs. Changes show on your site right away.

  3. Check the result

    Clear any page cache, then press Tab through a page and try it with a screen reader.

Who is it for?

  • Sites on a theme you cannot change yet

    Close a few common gaps now, while a theme change or a fix from the theme's author is planned.

  • Sites with many documents

    Councils, schools and associations that link to PDFs and Office files can tell visitors the file type and size before they download.

  • Keyboard users on older themes

    A skip link and a visible focus ring make a site usable with the Tab key when the theme left both out.

How it behaves, what it needs, and where its limits are.

Not an overlay
Nothing runs in the visitor's browser to change the page. Each fix is added on the server, so every visitor, device and screen reader gets the same HTML and CSS.
Theme first
The settings screen says it plainly: fixing the theme, or asking its author to, is always better, and no plugin setting makes a site accessible on its own.
What is left alone
Links that already mention a new tab or window, document links that already name the file type, files hosted on other sites, and form fields that already have a label, aria-label or title are not changed.
Theme requirements
The skip link needs a theme that calls wp_body_open, which modern themes do. The zoom fix cannot override a viewport tag that a theme prints after wp_head().
Light on the server
Only the fixes you turn on run, and the link fixes skip the admin, feeds and REST requests. Changes show right away; clear any page cache to see them.

Is this an overlay?

No. There is no widget, no toolbar and no script rewriting pages in the visitor's browser. Each fix is a small change to the HTML or CSS your server sends, the same for every visitor, and turning a fix off undoes it.

Will site fixes make my site meet WCAG?

No. They patch a few common theme problems. Fixing the theme itself is better, and the rest of the site still needs checking and testing by people.

Which fixes should I turn on?

Open a page in review mode and use the Whole page and Keyboard tabs. If they report no skip link, invisible keyboard focus, blocked zoom or links shown by color alone, the matching fix is worth trying. Leave a fix off when your theme already handles it.

Do site fixes change my saved posts?

No. The link fixes are applied to content as it is shown. Turn a fix off and the page goes back to how your theme renders it.

Can I use my own focus color?

Yes. Enter a hex color for the ring; Lumtera picks a halo so the ring stays visible on light and dark backgrounds. Leave it empty for near-black.
