Overview

AI writing help adds three optional buttons to the block editor's Accessibility sidebar. Each has its own switch in the Writing help in the editor card under Accessibility → Settings → AI: Suggest better link text, Suggest headings and Draft a plain-language summary. All three are off by default. They use the AI provider connected under Settings → Connectors, through the AI Client built into WordPress 7.0 and later, and the card only lists the switches once a connected provider can write text.

Suggest link text appears on three kinds of link issue: vague text such as "click here", a web address used as link text, and the same text used for links to different pages. Up to three suggestions come back, best first. Use replaces the words of the link in a paragraph or a Button block. The address stays the same, and an aria-label on the link is removed so screen readers read the new visible text. Suggestions that Lumtera's own link checks would flag again are dropped before you see them.

Suggest heading appears on bold text that looks like a heading. It shows the text As it is plus two Rewritten versions, and a button such as Use as H3 turns the paragraph into a heading at the level of the heading before it, or H2 if there is none. On long content with no subheadings, Suggest subheadings proposes two to four H2 headings, each placed Before a named paragraph, and Insert H2 adds them one at a time. When a post reads above grade 9, Draft a plain-language summary appears under Reading level. It writes a summary of up to about 120 words, which you edit in the panel and then add with Add at the top or Add at the top as a "Summary" details block.

Why it matters

Knowing that "click here" is vague, or that a long post needs subheadings, is the easy part. Finding better words on a deadline is where fixes stall — and a draft to react to is faster than a blank field.

  • Suggest a heading for bold text that works as one, or subheadings for long content that has none.
  • Draft a plain-language summary when a post reads above the target grade.
  • Each feature has its own switch, and each click is one request to your provider. Suggestions are drafts until a person chooses one.

How it works

  1. Connect a provider in WordPress

    Use Settings → Connectors, then turn on the suggestions you want under Accessibility → Settings → AI.

  2. Ask for a suggestion

    On a matching issue in the editor sidebar, ask for link text or a heading; a plain-language summary is offered under Reading level.

  3. Choose, edit, save

    Using a suggestion is an ordinary edit you can undo.

Who it helps

  • Writers cleaning up links

    Posts full of "read more" and pasted web addresses get specific link text in a few clicks. The author still picks the words, or writes better ones.

  • Long guides and documentation

    Suggest subheadings shows where new sections begin in a long stretch of text, so screen reader users can jump between them and everyone else can scan the page.

  • Public-sector and health content

    A short plain-language summary at the top of a dense page gives readers the main points first, which is what WCAG 3.1.5 Reading Level (AAA) asks for. The author checks every statement before adding it.

What is sent for link text
The link text, where the link points as site and page path only, the sentence and paragraph around it, the post title and, for a public page on your site, the linked page's title. Query strings and # fragments are never sent. Email, phone and text-message links are described, not sent, and private, draft or password-protected pages are never named.
What is sent for headings and summaries
Suggest heading sends the bold line, the text after it, the heading before it and the post title. Suggest subheadings sends the post title and the text of the paragraphs, lists and quotes, each cut to 400 characters, up to 80 of them. A summary sends the post title and the visible text of the post, up to about 3,000 words.
Only on a click
Only people who can edit the post can ask for a suggestion, and nothing is sent in the background or for visitors. Using a suggestion is an ordinary edit with an Undo button in the notice that follows. Nothing is saved until you save the post.
What the model is asked to do
Follow the WCAG criterion behind the issue, use only facts from the text it is given, and write in the language of the page. Link text must never be "click here", "read more" or a web address. A summary must add no facts, advice or opinions of its own.
Limits
Each person can make 30 AI requests in 10 minutes, across all AI features including alt text; developers can change that with the lumtera_ai_rate_limit filter. Summaries need at least 100 words and are not offered on pages built with a page builder. Subheadings need at least three paragraphs of text.

Is my content sent anywhere?

Only when someone clicks for a suggestion, and only to the AI provider the site owner connected. Lumtera stores no API keys and runs no servers.

Does it work in the classic editor or Elementor?

No. The writing buttons are part of the block editor's Accessibility sidebar only. Every check still runs in the classic editor and in Elementor, without AI help.

Does it cost anything?

Lumtera charges nothing for it. Your AI provider may bill for the requests under its own pricing; each click on a Suggest or Draft button sends one request.

Is text from these suggestions marked as AI-assisted?

No. Using link text, a heading or a summary is an ordinary edit, and it shows in the post's revisions like any other change. Only alt text accepted on the Alt text screen keeps a record of who accepted an AI suggestion.
