Updated for Lumtera 1.2.2 and Lumtera Pro 1.1.1.

Why does it matter?

"Click the round green button" or "see the box on the right" tells a blind visitor nothing, and on a phone the box "on the right" usually sits below the content. Instructions need to name the thing, not only describe how it looks or sounds.

Who it affects: Screen reader users, who rely on real lists and paragraphs to hear how content is grouped and how many items there are.

What does Lumtera flag?

Instruction-like phrases in body text (paragraphs, list items, table cells, captions and labels, not headings or navigation) that point to something by shape, size, color, position or sound, such as "click the round button", "the menu on the right" or "when you hear the beep". A sentence that also names the thing, in quotes, in brackets or with a capitalized name ("select Submit, the round button"), is skipped. At most five per page, all tips. The phrase list is English: it runs on text whose language (the nearest lang attribute, else the site language) is English, unless a developer adds phrases for another language with the lumtera_sensory_phrases filter.

Check ID sensory-language — use it to filter the content report or with wp lumtera issues --rule.

How do I fix it in WordPress?

Name the thing as well as describing it, using the words visitors see on it: write "select Submit (the round green button)" instead of "click the round green button", or "use the Search box in the sidebar" instead of "use the box on the right". Remember that on phones, things "on the right" often move below the content. If the text already names it, dismiss this item.

Example

Flagged

Click the round green button to continue.

Fixed

Select Continue (the round green button).

How do I check the fix?

 1. Update the post. The issue disappears from the Lumtera Accessibility sidebar on the next check, and from the site report on the next scan.
 2. With a screen reader, move to the list. It should announce "list, 3 items" (or similar) before the first item.

Find this issue across your whole site

Lumtera runs this check in the block editor sidebar as you write, in the Elementor panel, in Review mode on the live page, and across the whole site in the content report and with wp lumtera scan. You can change its severity or turn it off in Lumtera → Settings.
