Keyboard walk and widget tests
Review mode's Keyboard tab numbers every Tab stop on the page, flags focus you cannot see, and opens menus, dialogs and tabs from the keyboard.
Updated for Lumtera 1.2.2 and Lumtera Pro 1.1.1.
Overview
The Keyboard tab is part of review mode. View a post or page you can edit, choose Accessibility in the admin bar, and switch to Keyboard. Nothing runs until you ask, because both checks move focus around the page. Check keyboard access moves focus through the page as the Tab key would, up to 300 stops, and draws a numbered badge on each one. A "Tab order" list gives the same stops in words, and a checkbox hides the numbers.
The walk looks for what keyboard users run into: an element that shows no change when focused, focus that lands on something with no size, clipped, off screen or transparent, focus covered by a sticky header or cookie bar, Tab order that jumps back up the page, focus that reloads the page, changes the address or opens a dialog, content that appears on focus and stays open when Escape is pressed, and a script that stops the Tab key. Findings are listed with the usual severity, message and How to fix, and the badges are colored by the worst finding on each stop.
Test menus and pop-ups operates up to 40 widgets as a keyboard user would. It toggles disclosures, menus and accordions and checks their expanded state, looks for submenus that open on hover only, opens dialogs (including the Navigation block's mobile menu and common page builder pop-ups) and checks that focus moves in, they have a name, they are modal and they close with Escape, and presses arrow keys in tabs. Press Escape or choose Stop to end either run early; what was found so far is kept.
Why does it matter?
Many people use a site with the keyboard alone. They get stuck when focus vanishes into a closed menu, hides under a sticky header, jumps back up the page, or cannot leave a widget. Pressing Tab through every page by hand takes a long time, so these problems often go unnoticed until someone complains.
What do you get?
- Every Tab stop on the page numbered on screen, with the full Tab order in a list.
- Flags focus that cannot be seen, focus that goes somewhere invisible, focus hidden under a sticky bar, and Tab order that jumps back up the page.
- Flags focus that changes the page, pop-up content that does not close with Escape, and possible keyboard traps.
- Test menus and pop-ups opens disclosures, menus, accordions, dialogs and tabs as a keyboard user would, including the Navigation block's mobile menu, then puts the page back.
- Press Escape to stop a run at any time. If the page reloads mid-check, Lumtera offers to continue where it left off.
How does it work?
-
Open the Keyboard tab
View a page you can edit, choose Accessibility in the admin bar, and switch to the Keyboard tab in the review panel.
-
Check keyboard access
Lumtera moves focus through the page as the Tab key would, numbers each stop and lists what it found. Then choose Test menus and pop-ups to operate the widgets.
-
Confirm by hand
Scripted key presses are not a real keyboard. Press Tab and Shift+Tab through the flagged places yourself before you fix them.
Who is it for?
-
Checking a new theme or header
Before launch, see whether the menu, search toggle and mobile menu work from the keyboard, and where focus goes after each one.
-
Finding sticky header problems
A fixed header or cookie bar that covers the focused link is easy to miss with a mouse. The walk scrolls each stop to the edge of the window and checks what sits on top of it.
-
Showing a client the Tab order
The numbered badges make a confusing order easy to see on a screen share, without explaining what focus is first.
Good to know
How it behaves, what it needs, and where its limits are.
- Large pages
- The walk stops after 300 Tab stops or when its time runs out, and says so. The results cover the part of the page it reached.
- Pages that reload
- If focusing an element reloads the page, the Keyboard tab opens again after the reload, names the element and offers Continue the check. The same happens when a widget reloads the page during Test menus and pop-ups.
- Safe to run
- Clicks that would follow a link or submit a form are cancelled, new windows are blocked, and widgets are put back afterwards. If one cannot be restored exactly, the panel asks you to reload.
- Likely, not certain
- Some findings, such as a Tab order that jumps back up the page or a possible keyboard trap, can be intended. They are marked for a person to confirm with a real keyboard.
- Only for you
- Review mode loads only for logged-in users who can edit the post. Visitors never see the panel or the badges.

Questions
Something else on your mind? Contact support
Does the test change my page?
No. It runs only in your browser, while you watch, and puts menus and pop-ups back as it found them. Clicks that would follow a link or submit a form are cancelled. If a widget cannot be put back exactly, the panel says so and offers Reload page to reset.
Does it replace testing with a keyboard?
No. It finds likely problems quickly and shows you where to look. A person still needs to press Tab through the page to confirm them.
Can I stop a run with the keyboard?
Yes. While a check moves focus you cannot Tab to the Stop button, so pressing Escape stops it too.
Does it check that focus stays inside a dialog?
Not automatically. It checks that focus moves into the dialog, that Escape closes it and that focus returns to the button that opened it. It then asks you to press Tab past the dialog's last control yourself.
