Long passage in capital letters

Why it matters

Whole sentences in capitals are slower to read, because words lose the shapes readers recognise at a glance — a real barrier for many people with dyslexia. Some screen readers also spell typed capitals out letter by letter, as if they were abbreviations. Short labels and acronyms are fine.

Who it affects: People with dyslexia and other reading difficulties, low-vision readers who enlarge text, and anyone reading on a small screen — justified, tiny or all-capital text and underlines that are not links all slow reading down.

What Lumtera flags

Paragraphs, headings, list items, table cells, quotes and captions with a run of five or more words typed in capitals (at least four of them two letters or longer, so initials and acronyms do not count), and passages of twelve or more words displayed in capitals with text-transform: uppercase set in the content. It is a readability tip mapped to WCAG 1.4.8 (level AAA), not an AA requirement.

How to fix it in WordPress

Write the text in normal sentence case. Capitals are harder to read in longer passages, and some screen readers spell typed capitals out letter by letter. For emphasis, use bold instead. If the design calls for capitals, type the text normally and set Typography > Letter case to uppercase, and keep it to short labels. This is a readability recommendation, not a WCAG AA requirement.

How to check your fix

1. Update the post. The issue disappears from the Accessibility sidebar on the next check, and from the site report on the next scan.
2. Read the passage at 200% zoom on a phone-sized window. Text should be left-aligned, comfortably large, mostly in sentence case, and only links should be underlined.
