Updated for Lumtera 1.2.2 and Lumtera Pro 1.1.1.

Why does it matter?

The title attribute shows as a tooltip when a mouse hovers over something. Touch-screen and keyboard users never see it, voice-control users have no visible words to say, and some screen reader settings do not read it. When the tooltip is the only name a link, button or field has, many visitors cannot tell what it does.

Who it affects: Screen reader and keyboard users, who depend on ARIA and focus order being correct to understand and operate the page.

What does Lumtera flag?

Links, buttons, form fields (text inputs, selects and textareas) and elements with role="button" or role="link" that have a title attribute but no other name — no visible text, no <label>, no aria-label and no aria-labelledby. Hidden, submit, reset and image inputs are left out; image inputs are covered by the "Image button has no text" check.

Check ID name-from-title-only — use it to filter the content report or with wp lumtera issues --rule.

How do I fix it in WordPress?

Give the control a name everyone can perceive: visible text for a link or button, or a visible <label> for a form field. For icon-only links and buttons, add an aria-label with the same words as the tooltip. You can keep the title attribute, but do not rely on it.

Example

Flagged
<a href="/cart/" title="View your cart"><svg aria-hidden="true">…</svg></a>
Fixed
<a href="/cart/" title="View your cart" aria-label="View your cart"><svg aria-hidden="true">…</svg></a>

How do I check the fix?

  1. Update the post. The issue disappears from the Lumtera Accessibility sidebar on the next check, and from the site report on the next scan.
  2. Press Tab from the top of the page. Focus should move in reading order and never land on something invisible or silent.

Find this issue across your whole site

Lumtera runs this check in the block editor sidebar as you write, in the Elementor panel, in Review mode on the live page, and across the whole site in the content report and with wp lumtera scan. You can change its severity or turn it off in Lumtera → Settings.
